Celso Piña

Celso Piña (Born April the 6th 1953 in Monterrey, Nuevo León, México) is a notable mexican singer, composer and accordionist. In 2002, Piña was nominated for two Latin Grammy Awards: “Best Contemporary Tropical Album” and “Best New Artist From the North” as well as for “Best Alternative Artist” by the MTV Latino Awards. He is also know by the nicknames: “El Rebelde del Acordeón” and “El Cacique de la Campana”.

He’s an accordion player and singer who has risen to be one of the most notable figures in cumbia music. Cumbia has it’s origins in Colombia’s African and indigenous populations, but it has spread to be one of the most universal Latin American genres. Celso Piña is a pioneer in mixing or blending sounds of tropical base, combined with all kind of popular genres from norteño to sonidero, Ska, Reggae, Rap, Hip Hop or R&B, just to mention some. For this reason he’s considered one of the best musicians from Mexico and Latin America.

Celso’s album Barrio Bravo, which includes collaborations with other popular Latin musicans of various genres, brough to life the mega hit Cumbia Sobre El Rio. Many of his popular crossover songs, feature artists like Lila Downs, Control Machete, El Gran Silencio, Café Tacuva, Julieta Venegas, Blanquito Man and Sargento García, amongst many others.

But it was in 1980 when Celso Piña bought his first accordion and started his self-learning journey into the world of vallenato music, with long hours of rehersal, trial and error, in his modest house at “la colonia independencia”, a popular suburb, south of his home town, Monterrey. In this area, it´s where the “cumbia colombiana” started to rise, generating underground hits, like the very well known cumbia “Mi Colonia Independencia”.

In the mid 80s, celso was playing mostly “cumbia tropical”, but after listening to the Colombian cumbia pioneers, Aníbal Velasquez and Alfredo Gutierrez, during a popular local dance, He got inspired, and decided to enter fully into the vallenato music world, so he formed his own band, with brothers and friends, wich they called “Celso Piña Y Su Ronda Bogotá”.

Piña began playing side by side with his brothers Eduardo, Rubén, and Enrique, together, they serenade the neighborhood with musical covers from colombia and a few songs of their own, and after a lot of years of Celso´s self-taught accordion playing, he came to a style of his own. From his early beginnings with several important cumbias like, “La cumbia de la paz”, “El Tren”and “Como El Viento”, to his very famous version of “La piragua” (José Barros), he started to make some noise in the local scene.

During the first half of this decade, Celso began to show his music around the world, with the “Cumbia por el mundo” tour he has performed in more than 20 countries like: Colombia, Spain, United States, Canada, Denmark, Belgium, France, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Germany, Sweden, Poland, Italy, Argentina, Chile, Nicaragua, Perú, Morocco, among others.


Throughout his 35 years of career, he has recorded over 30 studio albums.

Chico Trujillo

South America’s hottest Cumbia Orchestra

Chico Trujillo is Chile’s most prominent Cumbia band. They are the soundtrack to every party from Santiago to Valparaiso. They can fill stadiums. Their mixture of classic cumbia and hints of rock and ska has assured them audiences from every generation and every walk of life.

Chico Trujillo started as an offshoot of punk/Ska band LaFloripondio in 1999. Thirteen years and five albums later, the offshoot has come to symbolize a uniquely Chilean cocktail. One that is rooted in the cumbias of the pre-Pinochet days and manages to incorporate every aspect of Chile’s popular culture. They have meshed bits and pieces of Chile’s fragemented past with the global influence of alternative culture and merged it all under the pan-latin banner of Cumbia.

It’s the first time since ska erupted out of Jamaican onto the world’s dance floors (three times over) that a a popular musical movement not born in the United States is going global. This time, though, it’s a hispanophone movement, making huge headways in Latin America, Europe and Japan.

They come from the legendary bands of Peruvian Cumbia and, after 40 years, they meet again to play finally together the music they participated in creating !

This musical wave was a phenomenon that could only take place during the sixties in Peru. A product of the effervescent environment of a decade of rediscovered freedoms, it takes roots in remote cities of Amazonia, and among children of immigrants who gave birth to a musical genre that is now an integral part of the Peruvian identity: Cumbia Huaracha, Amazonian Cumbia or simply Cumbia Peruana.

The Cumbia All Stars are among the creators of Peruvian Cumbia and they interpret, during their concerts, the most emblematic songs and the forgotten treasures of the repertory.

2013 is definitely the beginning of international achievements. In July 2013, they travel for the first time to Europe, on a successful tour of 18 dates in 10 different countries, among the most famous festivals of european summer, such as Festival Polé Polé (BE), the WasserMusik Festival (DE), the Amsterdam Roots Festival (NL), La Mar de Musicas (SP)…

Back to Lima in August, they start to work on the preparation of their first album, which will be released in January 2014 in Peru. In the meantime, they are invited by the Womex 13 Official Showcase Selection to represent the best of Peruvian Cumbia in Cardiff in October and announce their second European tour in less than 4 months!

Cumbia Villera

Damas Gratis

Damas Gratis (Spanish for “Ladies’ Night”, literally “Ladies for Free”), creators of the “cumbia villera” (from the word villa, the Argentine equivalent of Brazilian favelas) is undoubtedly the most important cumbia band in Argentina.

Debuting in 2000 in San Fernando on the northern outskirts of Buenos Aires at the hand of Pablo Lescano, Damas Gratis is considered by many Argentinians as the “Maradona of Cumbia” and is today one of the great names in Latin American cumbia; for its history, its trajectory and the popular craze at each gig.

Eight studio albums, three live albums, almost two million fans on Facebook, sold out concerts in the four corners of the continent and collaborations with the greatest Latin artists are amongst their achievements to date.

Dozens of groups have been inspired by this great band; commonly called “cumbia villera”, having spawned the diffusion of this undercurrent of cumbia, from Mexico to Patagonia, converting it as a standard bearer of the demands of the popular classes. This cumbiera villera, a soundtrack of Argentine ghettos, has for nearly two decades taken the place that the hip-hop movement occupies in our suburbs. Music has become the means of expression of the underprivileged classes.

Pablo Lescano is also the first cumbia artist to play in the famous River Plate stadium “El Monumental” in front of 80,000 people, invited by Los Fabulosos Cadillacs in 2008.

Sonido Gallo Negro

Sonido Gallo Negro (Black Rooster Sound) is a stunning 9-piece, instrumental combo from east Mexico City that channels both the mystique and mysticism of 1960’s Peruvian cumbia. The band integrates styles like Amazonian cumbia, huayno, cumbia sonidera, boogaloo and chicha (Peruvian cumbia) with electric guitars, Farfisa organ, theremin, flute and of course fluid Latin percussion. Spaghetti western soundtracks, psychedelia and surf music also echo in their compositions.

Sonido Gallo Negro’s music proposal enrichens and cultivates this musical genre with its exotic sui generis version that integrates outstanding visuals performed live by designer Dr. Alderete, who illustrates in real time.

Los Mirlos

Named after a black bird in their native jungle, Los Mirlos are the uncrowned kings of tropical Peruvian Cumbia, or Cumbia Amazonica. The band came together in Lima during the oil boom of the 70s and created a uniquely new and powerful party music inspired by the Anglophone psychedelic rock and surf music of the time.

Fast-forward some 40 years, and Los Mirlos have travelled and performed in almost every Latin American country, and are still considered essential for the culture of Amazonian Cumbia, not in the last place because of popular compilations such as “Roots of Chicha”, “Back To Peru”, and “Cumbia Beat Vol. 1”.

Songs like ‘La Danza de Los Mirlos’, ‘Sonido Amazónico’, ‘Lamento en la Selva’, ‘Muchachita del Oriente’, and ‘Chinito en Onda’ are kept in the memory of many people worldwide, who all danced to them at one point of their life.

The iconic band is well known for the incredible productions of psychedelic Peruvian Cumbia that they have produced since the 70’s. Widely known as the mastermind of the Peruvian-Amazonian Cumbia, they are back to the musical scene to share with the world the Peruvian musical history and the value of it.

La Dame Blanche

With her explosive mix of hip hop, cumbia, dancehall and reggae, the Cuban singer, flautist and percussionist Yaite Ramos Rodriguez, aka La Dame Blanche delivers a powerful and compelling sound which summons the spirits.

Before unfurling her costume Yaite has travelled a long and sometimes hard road. Everything starts in Cuba where she was born, in the heart of an awe inspiring musical cauldron on which reigns the figure of her father, Jesus “Aguaje” Ramos, an exceptional trombonist who is also the artistic director of the Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club. Family parties are gatherings of extraordinary musicians, the cream of Cuban music, to the sounds of thousands of songs and drums.

Today, she presents “Bajo El Mismo Cielo” her new album, produced by Marc Babylotion Damblé, French Beat Maker/Sound Engineer.

Joining this great party, this flamboyant and orgiastic round, is a slew of distinguished guests: Celso Piña and Serko Fu (Mexico), Manteiga from BATUK (South Africa), Rincon Sapiência (Brazil), Sergio Aguilera (Spain), … The tracks of Bajo El Mismo Cielo are rich in social meaning and claim their roots in the traditions of urban music.

Elza Soares

L’icône septuagénaire de la musique brésilienne, Elza Soares, s’est entourée de la crème de l’avant-garde de São Paulo pour son 34ème album studio, dans lequel elle aborde les sujets brûlants du Brésil actuel : le racisme, la violence domestique, le sexe, la toxicomanie et le réchauffement climatique. Des guitares distordues, un cor hurlant, des éclats électroniques : de la “dirty samba” (samba sujo) éreintée par le rock, le free jazz et autres formes expérimentales sur lesquelles Elza chante, crie, crache les récits d’une vie au Brésil étant tout sauf un paradis tropical.

Sacrée “chanteuse du millénaire” par la BBC en 2000, ses capacités vocales hors du commun (trois octaves et demi) et son sens inné du rythme en ont fait la chanteuse la plus titrée du Brésil. Elle a chanté l’hymne du Brésil en a cappella au stade du Maracanã devant 80 000 personnes au cours de la cérémonie d’ouverture des jeux panaméricains en juillet 2007.

Véritable légende de la musique brésilienne, son oeuvre s’étale sur sept décennies au cours desquelles elle aura associé la samba au jazz, à la soul, au funk, au hip-hop et même à la musique électronique. Elza traîne un destin en dents de scie, autant de triomphes que de tragédies qui ont fait d’elle la voix des classes refoulées dans son pays… Née dans une favela de Rio de Janeiro, elle subit un mariage forcé à l’âge de 12 ans; remporte un radio-crochet organisé par le compositeur Ari Barroso à 16 ans; se retrouve veuve et mère de trois enfants à 21 ans. Sa carrière musicale débute à la fin des années 50 alors qu’elle chante dans les clubs et hôtels, se contentant parfois des coulisses en raison de sa couleur de peau…

Les années 60 marquent un tournant décisif dans sa carrière puisqu’elle enchaîne les classiques sur le label Odeon, bien qu’en 1966 elle soit vilipendée par la presse pour son histoire amoureuse avec le très célèbre footballeur Garrincha. Tous deux se retrouvent expulsés du pays après la prise de pouvoir de la dictature militaire en 1969. Ils auront un fils en 1976, décédé dans un tragique accident de voiture en 1986, alors que Garrincha, lui, disparut 3 ans plus tôt des suites d’une cirrhose…

Après plusieurs passages à vide, elle ouvre un nouveau chapitre du soap opéra qu’est sa vie. Désormais figure de la “samba sujo” – esthétique hype de São Paolo – Elza revient avec un album à mi-chemin entre post-rock et post- samba. Le comeback triomphant d’une chanteuse à l’émotion viscérale… « Sexe et noirceur », voilà ce qu’elle a répondu au producteur Guilherme Kastrup lorsqu’il lui a demandé ce qu’elle voulait sur ce projet.

Elza expérimente sans la moindre appréhension et modernise plus que jamais la samba à travers ce nouvel album, ce qui pourrait sembler surprenant au regard de son statut de vétéran légendaire de la musique brésilienne.

Dengue Dengue Dengue

Dengue Dengue Dengue! is a Tropical Bass duo from Lima-Peru. Behind the masks are Felipe Salmon and Rafael Pereira, two producers, dj’s and graphic designers/vj’s.

DDD was born in mid-2010 and inmediatly made themselves well known thanks to an impeccable audiovisual show, remixing and making mash-ups from their own tracks with old cumbias and modifying cumbia cult themes to electronic versions. All this always joined by amazing visuals and the always present masks.

In early 2011 they began to publish their first productions, being bloggued in major and specialized music portals in USA, Europe and the UK. Their sound started to spread faster, playing in major events and festivals in Peru. Along with the “Auxiliar” Collective, the start producing the TOMA! Sessions, helping to consolidate the growing and vibrant Tropical Bass movement in Lima, inviting musicians and DJs from different places to share sounds and ideas.

In October 2012 they released their debut album “La Alianza Profana” (or “The Unholy Alliance”) and the video for the single “Simiolo” . The Album and video, both published by the Peruvian label Auxiliar, are an instant success with both the press and fans, locally and internationally . The album caught the attention of Berlin´s Chusma Records, who later (2013), re-released the Album for Europe, Asia and Australia. They start traveling and playing important shows like the NOVA Art Festival in Sao Paulo, Brazil and the III Iberoamerican Design Bienal in Madrid, Spain.

2013 is the year where things really took off : it started with a great Mexican tour and, in June, an amazing two month European Tour, playing at major festivals and clubs all around Europe in cities like Berlin, Vienna, Prague, Madrid , Barcelona, Paris, Stockholm among others. In July Chusma Records released the Simiolo Remixes EP, and Enchufada Records the track Lockumba for the “Upper Cuts” series, showcasing yet another side of the Dengue Dengue Dengue! sound.

By 2014 the sound of DDD had matured into a wider spectrum of sounds, bringing elements not only from Peru, but also studying and researching other cultures and their native sounds, traveling around Europe, Asia and the Americas playing shows, collecting sounds and ideas.

The duo released the EP “Serpiente Dorada” on Buraka Son Sistema´s label Enchufada Records, with 6 new tracks that take their music to a new level. They toured around the world during 3 European Tours (42 Shows) and also performed in Cuba, Japan, Argentina, Chile, China, Brazil, Colombia, etc. playing in the most renowned festivals like Roskilde, Dour, Paleo and an amazing show at the SONAR Festival Dome which was reviewed by Xlr8r as one of the best shows in the festival. They also had the honour of being invited by the Red Bull Music Academy to give a lecture in Tokyo on their academy sessions.

2016 is already full of projects and surprises, with the release of DDD´s second Album in May that will come with a new video and live show. They have 3 major tours planned for this year: a full Latin American tour from January to March, a European tour from May to August and a US and Canada Tour in September.

Hip Hop Mexico

Pato Machete

Patricio Chapa Elizalde, aka Pato Machete, along with Fermin IV and Toy Selectah, launches the Hip Hop band that set the tone and gave sound to a movement that reached beyond his own city, Monterrey, to be listened in countries around Latin America, and then the world:
Control Machete.

With Control Machete he recorded 3 albums: Mucho Barato (1997), Artilleria Pesada Presenta (1999) and Uno, Dos: Bandera (2003). An aggressive, direct and organic sound, with powerful lyrics accompanied by a sonic onslaught that quickly cemented them as an icon of Hispanic urban culture.

In 2008 he worked with the legendary producer Jason Roberts, and released his first solo album entitled Contrabanda which includes a cover of Señor Matanza, original by Mano Negra accompanied by the famous cumbia accordionist: Celso Piña.

He has shared the stage with international artists such as David Bowie, Eminem, Kanye West, 50 Cent, U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Faith No More, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Molotov, La Mala Rodriguez, among many others. He has also collaborated on recordings with Buena Vista Social Club, Cafe Tacuba, Anita Tijoux, Grupo Fantasma and Panteon Rococo, to name a few.

Pato is currently working on his third solo album which will be edited in May 2016. Then together, start the new world tour with his band CONTRABANDA.

He will be touring Europe for the first time in October 2016 with a frenetic Hip Hop Tropical live show to present his brand new album RIFA! (La Tuna Records / Warner Music)

PAULO FLORES

Paulo Flores

Paulo Flores, author, composer and interpret, is one of the most important references of Angolan music and a indefatigable advocate of semba.

At the age of 44, he celebrates 30 years of carrer, punctuated by 15 records. He’s performed with some of the biggest names in Afro-Luso music, including Tito Paris, Lura, and Sara Tavares.

Flores was appointed a UN Goodwill Ambassador for Angola in 2007, performed at WOMEX 2014, made his U.S. debut in 2015 and has been one of the celebrity judges on the Angolan version of the hit television show The Voice since 2015.

Flores scored his first hit as a teenager in the ‘80s, as one of the original architects of Angola’s immensely popular kizomba dance music. Today he keeps the flame of semba music burning bright in the 21st century.

Semba is the elegant, earthy, African cousin to Brazilian samba — and the root of today’s kuduro and kizomba dance crazes. Flores’ poetic compositions focus on everything from love and life to history and politics, tapping into the deep roots that make semba the repository of decades of Angolan wit and wisdom. In a country where the deep wounds of civil war are plastered over with new oil money and a beachfront building boom. Paulo Flores keeps a nation’s conscience and memory alive, and gives voice to the soul of a nation.

Totó la Momposina

A magnificent performer, Toto La Momposina is a charismatic living legend of Afro-Colombian song, the original “Queen of Cumbia” whose entire life has been dedicated to representing the music of her country’s Caribbean coastline. A mix of African, indigenous Indian and Spanish cultures gave the region the rich musical traditions which Toto has been instrumental in keeping alive and taking to international audiences.

Cumbia is the percussive style characterised by off-beat polyrhythms which exploded across Latin America and beyond; today it is one of the most influential and best-loved musical exports of the region.

Toto’s music has touched artists far and wide, from Timbaland (his track ‘Indian Flute’ samples Toto’s Curura) to Manu Chao (who borrowed a chorus from La Verdolaga) to Michel Cleis’ 2009 cumbia-house mega hit La Mezcla (the Ibiza dance track of the summer samples vocals and tambores from El Pescador, No 1 in the Spanish play list for 6 weeks), to Calle13 those who invited her to take part in the song that has turned into the ode of Latin America “Latinoamérica”.

Hailing from Talaigua, a tiny village on the banks of the mighty Magdalena River, Toto was born into a family of musicians spanning five generations. The household lived with the musical traditions of ‘la costa’ and she learned to sing and dance as a child. As a teenager, she traveled from village to village researching their various rhythms and dances and studying the art of the cantadora – the gifted women at the heart of rural cultural life.

Since the 1960s when Toto emerged as a popular singer, these rhythms have formed the core of a vast repertoire which also embraces other Latin American traditions such as Cuban son, guaracha and bolero. She has toured internationally since the 1970s and in 1982 accompanied Gabriel Garcia Marquez to Stockholm to perform at his Nobel prize ceremony. In the early 1990s her global fame was cemented by a WOMAD tour across three continents and the release of La Candela Viva, the first of many acclaimed albums. In 2006 she was presented with the WOMEX Lifetime Achievement Award for her extraordinary contribution to world music. A dynamic 73 year old, Toto continues to work tirelessly to promote the music of her homeland, driven by passion and the simple joy of performance.

Her genre, “World Pop Indie”, includes international songs such as Eres para mi, and Limon y Sal featuring the first category (Lenine / Vicentico (Los Fabulos Cadillacs) / La Mala Rodriguez / Celso Piña / Cafe Tacuba / Ana Tijoux / Los Autenticos Decadentes…) which made this Mexican singer known for her atypical, polished styled voice throughout the continent of Latin American.

During her career Julieta Venegas took away one “Grammy Award” and 7 “Latin Grammy Awards”.

On her second album, “Bueninvento”, which was released in 2000, Julieta Venegas collaborated with Joe Gore, guitar (Tom Waits, PJ Harvey and Lisa Germano) Joey Waronke, drums (Beck, R.E.M, Smashing Pumkins) and Fernando Saunders, bass (Lou Reed).

Being socially engaged in women’s rights she was nominated in September 2009 as an ambassador for UNICEF in Mexico.

In addition to this she was invited to play at the “Prize Nobel” ceremony in Oslo (Norway) in August 2008.

Prince, among other fans, came many times to see her concerts. Brazilian artist, Marisa Monte has recorded with Julieta Venegas various duos.

In November, 2012, her album, Bueninvento (2000) was nominated third in Britain’s Rolling Stone magazine for “Top 10 Latin Rock Albums in History” coming in before Clandestino by Manu Chao and Abraxas by Carlos Santana.
